Ivory Coast Parts Ways with Coach Jean-Louis Gasset After There Loss at Afcon 2023

Ivory Coast Removes Jean-Louis Gasset as Coach Following 4-0 Defeat by Equatorial Guinea in Afcon 2023

Ivory Coast has taken decisive action, dismissing coach Jean-Louis Gasset just two days after their significant 4-0 loss to Equatorial Guinea in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. This defeat marked the heaviest home loss in Ivory Coast’s history and positioned them as the first Afcon host to suffer two group stage losses since 1984.

Despite this setback, the Elephants still hold slim hopes of advancing to the Round of 16 as one of the best third-placed teams. Emerse Fae, one of Gasset’s coaches, will assume an interim role as they navigate the remaining matches.

The decision to part ways with Gasset, along with his assistant Ghislain Printant, was attributed to “insufficient results,” as announced by the country’s football federation. Ivory Coast concluded the group stage with three points in Group A, securing a 2-0 victory against Guinea-Bissau but succumbing to a 1-0 loss to Nigeria.

With hopes hanging in the balance, Ivory Coast now relies on the outcomes of the last group stage matches on Wednesday to determine if they can secure a place in the next round. Gasset, appointed in May 2022, replaced Patrice Beaumelle, whose contract was not renewed after the team’s failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup and their exit from the previous Nations Cup in Cameroon.
