Loan Agreement Secured: Kalvin Phillips Set to Join West Ham on Loan, Manchester City Approves Deal

West Ham has successfully negotiated a loan deal with Manchester City for the transfer of Kalvin Phillips. Since his £45 million move from Leeds in July 2022, Phillips has only made 31 appearances for City. Pep Guardiola, expressing doubts about the midfielder’s place in his team, admitted in December that he couldn’t envision Phillips featuring prominently.

At 28 years old, Phillips is now poised to depart the Etihad on a temporary basis, with West Ham securing the option to make the move permanent. Currently returning from Manchester City’s warm-weather training camp in Abu Dhabi, Phillips is expected to undergo a medical with West Ham later this week.

While Crystal Palace and Newcastle also expressed interest in a deal this month, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, and Juventus were reportedly among the international clubs intrigued by Phillips. Despite such attention, the midfielder has yet to secure a Premier League start this season, having only started twice in the previous term.

Guardiola, revealing his difficulty in finding a place for Phillips in the team, disclosed before the transfer window that he struggled to visualize the 28-year-old in his tactical setup.
