AS Roma Parts Ways with Jose Mourinho After Two and a Half Years; Daniele De Rossi Named Successor

AS Roma has officially terminated its association with Jose Mourinho after a challenging period for the team. The decision comes amid a series of setbacks, with the Giallorossi winning only one of their last six Serie A matches and facing elimination from the Coppa Italia by city rivals Lazio, during which Mourinho received a dismissal.

The team currently sits in ninth place in Serie A, trailing league leaders Inter Milan by 22 points. Mourinho, who took on the role in 2021, enjoyed a tenure of two-and-a-half years, clinching the Europa Conference League title in 2022. Additionally, he led Roma to the Europa League final last season, where they were narrowly defeated by Sevilla on penalties. Mourinho’s contract was set to conclude in June.

Notable contenders for the managerial position included Graham Potter and Antonio Conte. A statement from AS Roma expressed gratitude to Mourinho for his passion and efforts during his time with the club, acknowledging the positive memories he leaves behind. However, the decision for an immediate change was deemed to be in the best interests of the club’s future.

On Tuesday morning, Roma owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin personally informed Mourinho of their considered decision at the Trigoria training ground. This move, not impromptu, reflects a deliberate evaluation of the team’s performance throughout the season, especially in the last month. The owners believe that now is the opportune moment to redirect the team’s course.

As a consequence of this decision, Roma’s scheduled training session was canceled. The team is set to face Verona, currently in 18th place, on Saturday.
