Anthony Joshua Shares Candid Thoughts on Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk Bout

Anthony Joshua has expressed astonishment at the breakdown of negotiations for the highly anticipated fight between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk, which was recently declared as not happening.

Fury, the WBC champion, was slated to make a dramatic return to the ring on April 29th at Wembley, facing off against unified champion Usyk in what was expected to be an undisputed heavyweight title showdown.

However, the boxing community was taken aback when Alexander Krassyuk, Usyk’s promoter, announced on Wednesday that the mega-fight was off due to disagreements in the negotiation process. Usyk, who previously defeated Joshua to claim his world titles, had conceded to Fury’s terms for a 70-30 purse split in favor of Fury, also known as the ‘Gypsy King.’

The negotiations hit a snag over Fury’s demand for Usyk to waive the rematch clause in their agreement, a point which has become a contentious issue in their discussions.

Joshua, who faced successive defeats to Usyk, is gearing up for a comeback against Jermaine Franklin on April 1st at the O2 Arena in London. In the lead-up to this match, Joshua commented on the current state of boxing negotiations, particularly those involving Fury. He expressed relief that fans are now witnessing the challenges fighters face in arranging bouts.

The 33-year-old former two-time heavyweight champion, who had previously been linked to a fight with Fury in a potential all-British clash, reflected on his own experiences. He recounted how a planned fight with Fury fell through twice, first due to Fury’s legal arbitration with Deontay Wilder, and then due to the complications now observed with the Usyk negotiations.

Joshua emphasized the difficulties and unpredictability of fight negotiations, contrasting his experiences with the straightforward arrangements made for his two fights against Usyk. His comments shed light on the often complex and tumultuous process of organizing high-profile boxing matches.
